What the F is a JPEG committee

Honestly, I could care less about a JPEG Standards and “Windows Media Photo”, but there’s a JPEG Standards Group? Who are these people? Why are they meeting? Doesn’t the Interweb usually figure this shit out for itself?

Microsoft’s ongoing attempt to establish its own photo format as a JPEG alternative (and potential successor) took another step forward today when the JPEG standards group agreed to consider HD Photo (originally named Windows Media Photo) as a standard.

Microsoft HD Photo considered for standardization by JPEG committee

Are you kidding? I can’t tell. Things like image and movie standards do not just evolve from vapor. It takes smart people with letters after their names using math skills that most of us have long forgotten. JPEG stands for “Joint Photographic Experts Group”, and the JPEG standard was created, owned and managed by that “group”. MPEG stands for “Motion Picture Experts Group”; that group has the same kind of control over the MPEG standards and patents.

This helps to avoid having the market polluted with strange variations, like “Microsoft’s JPEG” and “Adobe’s JPEG” etc. It’s a Good Thing.
