Yahoo Mail Goes Global, Adds Text Messaging and IM

Let me just say Thanks Mashable for breaking the news. This is totally awesome, as I use Yahoo! Mail Pro (so worth the $20/year) for my personal e-mail. F Yeah!

Yahoo is set to announce two major additions to Yahoo Mail tomorrow: the addition of text messaging to mobile phones and the integration of Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. Yahoo Mail beta is also going global on Monday, although the free text messaging will be limited to the US, Canada, India and the Philippines.

As shown in the screenshot below, the new text messaging feature will allow you to enter in a phone number and send a message (for free), initiating a conversation from within Yahoo Mail. The upgrade also brings the interoperability of Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger inside the Yahoo Mail interface, so you can exchange instant messages with users of the respective networks. Additionally, users will be able to convert emails into text messages or IMs as users sign online or go mobile.

The announcement comes on the heals of Yahoo Mail introducing “unlimited storage” in May and the ongoing interface enhancements Yahoo has been making since the beta was first released. Despite Yahoo Mail officially being offered to anyone that wants it, Yahoo Mail Classic will remain available for those that prefer a lightweight webmail application.
